Those who work in travel and tourism often see more of the world than many others. It also means a closer insight into the hardship and the poverty and often unbearable conditions under which a large part of the world’s population is forced to live. It is especially difficult to see severely vulnerable children.
As privileged travelers from Sweden, without doing anything was not an option for the founders of the New Hope Travel Industry Children’s Fund, when during a trip to Tibetan Lhasa in 1988 they decided to turn words into action. The following year, the organization was born.
For many years, the name was simply “Travel Industry Children’s Fund”. No one had thought at that time that there could be more industries and companies interested in getting involved.
Over the years, things changed and in the mid-2000s, New Hope was added to the name, partly to describe what the organization was working on – to create hope. But also to be able to address companies and people outside the travel industry more easily.
To date, more than SEK 35 million has been collected and used in the best possible way – to give vulnerable children in the world the opportunity to shape their own future by being given access to proper homes, schools, preventive healthcare, food and clothing.
Since aid work in other countries often requires extensive administration, the fundraising organization The Travel Industry Children’s Fund initially decided to cooperate with an established aid organization: SOS-Barnbyar. They could guarantee that the Travel Industry’s collected funds were used properly.
In the early years, The Travel Industry Children’s Fund financed, among other things, thirteen house constructions through SOS Children’s Villages. The Travel Industry Children’s Fund also contributed to the founding of three family houses in Thailand, two in St. Petersburg, two in Tibet, one in Benin, one in Estonia, one in Latvia, one in Lithuania, one in South Africa and one in India.
After a decade of supporting SOS Children’s Villages, New Hope Children’s Fund decided that from the turn of the millennium in 2000, it would focus on supporting slightly smaller organizations and actors, with concrete support projects and activities.
Today, support from New Hope Travel Industry Children’s Fund goes to projects in a number of countries and different recipients. While we provide support to improve the conditions for children, we always require clear follow-up. In many cases, New Hope Travel Industry Children’s Fund´s work has resulted in increased knowledge and insights among those who run and work locally with the children, about how a business is managed in a smart and long-term sustainable way with planning, anticipation and reporting. This is not something that New Hope pays for, but we are happy to support this work because it gives us better visibility.
